My Journey through the streets of italy
The thought of placing my feet firmly on the cobblestone ground of Italy was like a dream. I have never imagined this dream coming true so soon. It will always be an unforgettable experience and the memories in these photos are meant to last forever. My study abroad for Italy Eats taught me more than just the course outline of food, history, and culture. I learned to appreciate what Italians hold near and dear to heart; that is rest and time. Americans are always on-the-go, trying to beat the clock with productivity, and rest is sometimes looked upon as idleness. Time is so precious because it is something one could never retrieve again once it passes.
Our home base, Ferrara, has definitely allowed me to fully immerse in the Italian culture; there were many locals and few tourists. The day begin as I wake up to the sound of my alarm clock and get ready for breakfast. Sweet pastries, savory sandwiches, fruit, and of course, coffee and juices make up the Italian breakfast. Lunch would consist of pasta, pizza, ravioli, risotto, spaghetti, and everything else Italian. Dinner is pretty much the same with different options of pasta and meat, speaking of meat, salami is a very popular dish in Italy! Oh, let's not forget about the most important part of every meal: dessert. We had gelato in just about every city we visited and none disappointed.
Italian transportation is much different from what Americans are used to, I have never walked so much in my entire life, we were on our feet from sunrise to sunset; all that walking offset our food indulgences. Here in America, we mainly drive cars and have to make an effort to walk, let alone exercise, whether at a park, on the treadmill, or at the mall. In Italy, people commute with bicycles, mopeds, motorcycles, trains, and on feet. Pedestrians must watch out for bikers as numerous bikes zoomed by us on the local streets of Ferrara. There are no yield signals and whoever is the fastest proceeds first. Italians drive automobiles too, just not as frequent as Americans because the roads are small and narrow. Just food for thought, Italians do not buy brand-named cars they like, but cars that will actually fit in small, tight places, especially in crowded areas.
The elaborate, decorative, historical buildings in different cities, touristy or not, from many centuries ago took my breath away. I was impressed by all the monuments, museums, doors with massive architectural design, and cathedrals that still stand strong to this day, despite being built hundreds of years ago. Beautiful hills, landscape, trees, and nature in Tuscany blew my mind because of the aesthetically stunning scenery. Without a doubt, the spirit of tranquility surrounds the gorgeous, breathtaking land of Tuscany. It is a place that brings calmness, peace, and a sound mind.
Italy has given me the travel experience of a lifetime that I once thought was hard to reach. I am so grateful to have toured an amazing country different from my own, immersed myself in the Italian lifestyle and cuisine, and broaden my horizons through a perspective of the world we live in, only on the other side of the globe.
Thank you for allowing me to share my Italian journey with you.
